In this interview, Sarah Gross, the director of Open Screenplay's KIN, which won 7 awards and was selected for 15 festivals, discusses her journey into filmmaking. Sarah shares her experience starting off as a PA in the Assistant Director department for network television shows including Gotham, The Blacklist, and Persons of Interest, and then talks about what she learned completing a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Sarah talks about her experience working with Maddison Tebbut, the winner of Open Screenplays 1st Short Film Contest, to rewrite The Arrears into KIN. Sara then dives into the experience of directing KIN and how she overcame a list of challenges. Sara also discusses how directors approach and read screenplays and she gives invaluable advice to screenwriters.
Sarah Gross is an award-winning director who has directed, written, and produced commercials and short films for clients, such as Pepsi, UGG, Fashion Rocks, Jaunt VR, and others. She is known for crafting character-driven work with emotional resonance, arresting visuals, and provocative themes. Her interest lies in developing action, thriller, and science-fiction films with psychologically rich characters and female-centric narratives. Sarah’s female led sci-fi/action short film BOLÉRO premiered at Telluride Film Festival and was a finalist for the 2019 Student Academy Awards. Sarah is currently attached to direct five feature films, including THE STRANGE FASCINATIONS OF NOAH HYPNOTIK, a hyper-visual teen adventure movie for Paramount with Gotham Group attached to produce, and the psychological thriller THE HALFWAY INITIATIVE. Sarah is also currently developing BOLÉRO into a feature with writer SJ Inwards attached to pen the script.
